Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

It's been 42 years since the very first Star Wars and after 9 films we've reached the end of the Skywalker Saga. The Star Wars world spans beyond the big screen too, with comic books, web series, and animated series. It's been a massive part of the geek world, and we're sure it will continue to be.

So what do we have in store for the last film? The Rise of Skywalker will bring an end to the Sith v Jedi conflict, with Rey, Kylo, Poe and Finn returning for the final film. The man himself Mark Hamill comes back too, now at one with the Force. And another OG returning after 36 years!) is Billy Dee Williams as the charming Lando.

On the day of the big release we'll be chatting about all things Star Wars, old and new.

First up, who's coming back? Princess Leia was originally written to be a bratty teenager, spoiled by royal parents, but eventually her character became the one we all know and love today. The fearless, war leader played by Carrie Fisher. Carrie sadly passed away between the 1st and 2nd films of the trilogy. But she'll be present in all three of the sequel films. Leia will return in the final film by using clips from hundreds of hours of unused film from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

Rey was a quick favourite in the cosplay world. After The Force Awakens released in 2015 Rey became the new Harley Quinn at conventions. We've loved watching a new female powerhouse take the main stage in the sequel trilogy. She's strong, a quick learner, witty, and generally pretty badass. Although we're probably all still p*ssd off she got that hug instead of Chewie. *rolls eyes*

Finn, previously known as FN-2187, left his position as a Stormtrooper and joined the rebellion in the first of the sequel films. He's made some hard decisions, been a relentless friend, and added some pretty good comedy value to his scenes. We're looking forward to seeing his part in the final installation.

Who will we miss?

While we're getting lots of fan favourites returning in the final film, we'll miss a lot of characters who met their fate earlier on.

Young Anakin, later known as Darth Vader, hasn't been in the sequel films - because RIP- but there has been references to him by his number one fanboy Kylo Ren. And we've lost some of other key characters along the way too. Anakin's love Padme died shortly after giving birth to twins Leia and Luke. She rose as a queen on her home planet and fought as a Senator for democracy, unfortunately she sadly died with the knowledge that her husband had gone to the dark side.

Outside of the main films Rogue One was a big one for character deaths. In a few hours we fell in love with a group of characters destined to sacrifice their lives. And even though we knew it, it didn't hurt any less. Chirrut, Jyn, Cassio, Bodhi, and Kay2 to name a few were all hard to say goodbye to, but their sacrifice meant the Death Star schematics were stolen, giving the resistance a glimpse of hope.

Star Wars is far more than just the big screen, with several spin off series including The Mandalorian. The series recently exploded after premiering on Disney+. It takes place between the fall of the Empire and birth of the First Order, and follows the adventures of lone wolf Mando.

The Twi'lek species has been seen here and there in the Star Wars world, and though they've never had a huge rule in the main films they've been more frequent in the Clone Wars animated series. The name Twi'lek was originally a name coined outside of any actual piece of media and wasn't in the films. Thought it's now a recognised term.

Another spin off character is Qi'ra. We met her in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but she was also in Disney's 2D web series 'Star Wars Forces of Destiny'. The web series spans across the Star Wars timeline and universe, and focuses on women in the series. Qi'ra played by Emilia Clarke doesn't make it into the Skywalker Saga unlike her friend/lover Han Solo, and it's only hinted at where her storyline will go following the film.
